Weekly Review

On 14th September, I showcased both versions of the website to Dr. Shawn, one with real photographs and the other with stock illustrations. He much preferred the version with real photographs, though he suggested to switch some photos around for better presentation.

Working through Troubles

One notable suggestion was the addition of a group photo with a lot of participants holding certificates with the judges in the ‘Why Choose Us?’ section. I had a bit of trouble doing this with the current layout of the website, so I made two versions. One where the people were cut out, and one where it was implemented as a background of sorts.

I also struggled showcasing the ‘Flexible’ section of the ‘flowchart’ properly. Dr. Shawn suggested I should use three different photos: one of someone holding a violin, one of a drummer, and one doing storytelling. I found the three photos needed. However, the ‘Media and Text’ function and the ‘Slideshow’ function in WordPress could not be combined to have a more pleasing look. I decided to keep this in mind during next week’s meeting, as the three other options would be to overhaul the look of the website, edit the three photos in a collage, or to make a GIF—which would require approval of the selected photos first. In the end, I decided to use a photo of a violinist that I got from the Facebook album Dr. Shawn provided me and made that the sole photo for the ‘Flexible’ section first.

Reflection

I really experienced the limitations of WordPress this week, but I learned to work with it. Although I contemplated downloading some plugins, I decided against it after I read some online advice saying that doing so could slow down the website’s running time, which would hurt the user’s browsing experience. A simple-looking but fast website would always triumph an extravagant but slow website!

Next Week’s Plans

I hope that I can work on the individual webpages that details the functions of Sayembara next week.
