Weekly Review
On 17th August, I showcased my progress on the mockup to Dr. Shawn during our weekly meeting. He mentioned that it was already satisfactory, and that I should start working on the WordPress website.
After the meeting, I started by uploading almost all the graphics I’ve edited onto WordPress. Since I had to double-check the quality of the clip art I edited, and to ensure they were the recommended size, it took me a bit of time since some of the edits I made were a bit sloppy.
After that, I changed the favicon and the title of the website to the ones that were approved by Dr. Shawn during the first week.
Then, I tried to change the contents of the website to follow what I had envisioned for it.
Problems with Navigating a New Platform
One of the problems I faced while using WordPress was when I tried to make a part of the page full-width, but it just kept looking like it was being boxed inside a white border. Although I have watched several YouTube tutorials, and even some browsed through some forums to fix it, it just wouldn’t change to be completely full-width.
After a few hours of trial-and-error, I realized that I had to change how the page looks within the theme—Astra—itself. It was quite an embarrassing mistake of mine, but at least I have more familiarity with using WordPress now.
Reflections
I believe I was hesitant on using WordPress at first because it would be my first time using such a platform—especially when I had the power to edit an already-established website. I was worried that I would accidently break anything that was already working well. However, with Dr. Shawn’s reassurance that it would be completely fine, I had the courage to make some changes to the website.
I also learned that although using WordPress is much easier than coding in CSS, it also has its restrictions. It reminded me of what I learned during my Software Design subject last semester—that software engineers often have to build within the limitations of the project’s requirements. Thus, I felt satisfied that I actually managed to apply what I’ve learned in university in actual, practical work outside of academia.
Next Week’s Plans
I hope to complete the main page by next week after improving on my skills in using WordPress.
