A Welcome Ceremony
On 27th July, I found out that both me and Liang Yao will be starting our internship journey at AESTE while in a call with Dr. Shawn. He gave us a warm welcome, assisted in setting up our work accounts, and gave a brief description on both of our job scopes.
Dr. Shawn had assigned me, for the time being, to look at some examples of websites that’ll be similar to the one that I’ll be working on. I basically am in charge of the ‘marketing’ of the product, so I need to make sure that the examples that I’ll be following could attract more potential investors.
Task Acquired
On 28th July, I had a one-to-one meeting with Dr. Shawn regarding on improving the aesthetics of the Sayembara website. After giving my opinions on what could be improved on, he gave me this week’s task where I have to come up for a logo for the website. I decided that highlighting the ‘S’ in ‘Sayembara’ would be a good idea for a simple but effective logo.
Being Careful!
I used Canva to achieve this task, at first. When I sent the new logo to him, however, we both discovered that using the specific font I chosen may not be legal for commercial distribution. So, I have decided to look for free-for-commercial-use fonts and create two logo samples using the fonts chosen by Dr. Shawn—which were Wonderia and Great Victorian.
Planning the Improved Version of Sayembara
On 29th July, the logo was finalized. After sending the finalized logo and getting Dr. Shawn’s approval, I spent the rest of the week working on a mockup website in Canva. So far, I have 90% finished the mockups for two pages—the Home and the About Us page.
Reflection
I should be more careful when downloading and/or using assets from any sources, as their usage policy might not allow it to be used on a website meant to promote a product—like Sayembara. I have followed Dr. Shawn’s advice and used Magnific (previously known as Freepik) a lot for the mockup website’s graphics. I did utilize some of Canva’s own assets, but after learning about how some of them might not be entirely free-use, I will ensure that I will replace them for Magnific’s assets, or draw them myself entirely for the real Sayembara website.
Next Week’s Plans
I hope that I can finish the mockup website by next week, as there are only two pages left to be planned out and finished. Once I’m done with that, I’ll have a look on the actual Sayembara website using WordPress, and hope that I can make a little bit of progress on editing the look of the website to match the mockup’s.
