Feeling This Week
This week was different from my previous weeks because I was not focused on completing a specific technical task. Instead, I spent time thinking about what I wanted to learn next and how I could contribute more meaningfully during the remainder of my internship.
Even during my leave for the Hari Raya Haji celebration, I found myself reflecting on possible internship project ideas. Since most of my assigned GitHub tasks had already been completed, I felt motivated to explore opportunities that could align with my Software Engineering studies while also providing value to the company.
Challenge This Week
One of the biggest challenges was identifying a suitable internship project that met both academic requirements and practical constraints.
After discussing with my lecturer, I understood that my main internship project should be related to Software Engineering, such as software development, system design, software testing, database management, or API integration. With that in mind, I brainstormed several ideas and initially proposed developing a web-based system that could potentially be useful for EuroAsia.
However, after discussing the idea with Dr. Shawn, he advised me to consider other options because the project scope might be too large to complete within the remaining internship period.
Following his suggestion, I sought feedback from actual users, including Gabie and Tristan, to identify possible improvements for existing systems. Based on their feedback, I proposed several enhancement ideas, such as improving event category displays for administrators and enhancing the results export functionality.
Unfortunately, after reviewing these proposals, Dr. Shawn pointed out that the ideas were mostly backend-related and did not fit the type of project he had in mind for me.
Solution and Actions Taken
Instead of becoming discouraged, I treated the feedback as part of the learning process.
I learned that generating ideas is only the first step. A good project must also be achievable within the available time, align with internship objectives, and provide opportunities to demonstrate the required technical skills.
After discussing the situation further, I decided not to force a project idea that might not be suitable. Instead, I informed Dr. Shawn that I was open to any task or project that he believed matched my capabilities and learning goals.
This allowed me to remain flexible while ensuring that I could continue contributing effectively to the team.
Reflection
This experience taught me that having ideas is important, but they must also be practical, achievable, and aligned with project requirements. Feedback from both users and supervisors plays a key role in shaping better solutions.
Looking Ahead
I am looking forward to the next task assigned by Dr. Shawn and am excited to continue learning new skills and gaining more real-world development experience.
